Common Handshake Tasks
The West Virginia University (WVU) Career Center has established comprehensive guidelines to ensure ethical and equitable recruiting practices on campus.
General Expectations:
- Employers must align with WVU’s Values and adhere to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Principles for Ethical Professional Practice.
- Must be a legitimate organization with verifiable business details, including name, physical and web addresses, phone number, and a reachable contact person.
- Foreign-based businesses may be verified by the U.S. Department of State.
- Must comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws, including equal employment opportunity regulations, WVU’s non-discrimination policies, immigration, and affirmative action laws.
Recruitment Conduct:
- All recruitment activities should be coordinated through the appropriate career centers or departments.
- Unannounced classroom visits and unsolicited communications with faculty or staff are prohibited.
- All marketing efforts on campus must receive prior approval from the WVU Career Center or the specific WVU School, College, or Department you’re targeting. Avoid aggressive tactics; unsolicited or excessive communications to students are discouraged.
Student Protections:
- Employers cannot charge students fees during the job search or employment process.
- Positions requiring students to purchase or rent sales kits or similar materials will not be posted unless exceptions are granted by Career Services.
- Refrain from pressuring students to attend events or accept offers hastily.
- “Exploding offers,” which require acceptance within 48 hours or less, are not permitted.
- Do not encourage students to renege on existing job offers from other organizations.
